RaShawn “Pookie” Powell will not be returning to Memphis next season. Instead, the former four star high school recruit has decided to transfer to La Salle University. Powell, who is commonly referred to as “Pookie”, is a 6-foot-1 point guard from Orlando, Florida.
After sitting out his first year under Memphis head coach Josh Pastner, Powell averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 assists per game during his second year, where he played in 27 games and started in eleven of them. Memphis would finish the season with a 18-14 record.
While his college career has gotten off to a slow start, Pookie did help lead his alma mater, Dr. Phillips High School, to a 20-8 record and a regional final during his senior year, where he averaged 27.8 points (school record), 5.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.8 steals per game. He would later be named Florida’s Class 8A Player of the Year and was one of eight finalists for Florida’s Mr. Basketball award.
Coach Giannini will have to wait to see Powell suit up for the Explorers, as he must sit out the 2015-2016 season because of NCAA transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility remaining when he returns.
